Richard Browes

Richard Browes graduated from King's College, University of London in 1993 with an honours degree in Law, and completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice at the College of Law in 1994. Richard went on to train at one of London's leading law firms and was involved in (at that time) the world's largest patent action. On admission as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales in 1997, Richard worked in the litigation department of the same London firm, widely regarded as one of the best in Europe.
Richard also worked at another major London firm in its IP department, where he was responsible for the UK brand enforcement program for a number of global organisations. During this time, Richard prepared a report on UK and European Anti-Counterfeiting measures for the Japanese Government, and published and article on copyright in the European Intellectual Property Review.
Richard has a first class Masters degree in the creative arts, and before becoming a Consultant at FAL in early 2007, Richard was Manager of Business and Legal affairs for a number of years at a leading media company in New Zealand.
Upon joining FAL, Richard has worked closely with the partners of the firms accross a wide variety of matters, and also spent six months on part time secondment to an independent association of minerals companies that develops, brokers and facilitates collaborative research projects, assisting with the development of policies, contracts and procedures relating to its large portfolio of domestic and international research projects. Richard undertakes a significant amount of work for a major public health service in Victoria.
Relevant experience
- drafting commercial contracts;
- advising upon intellectual property development and commercialisation, including confidentiality, contract research and collaboration agreements;
- intellectual property licensing accross a range of sectors, including copyright and software licensing;
- brand protection and enforcement;
- structuring of joint venture vehicles;
- commercial disputes;
- negotiation and drafting of purchase and support agreements for high cost medical equipment;
- establishment, structuring and winding up of Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs), including the preparation of associated documentation; and
- drafting suites of model agreements.
