Export Controls

The Defence and Export Controls Office regulates the export of many goods (tangible and intangible) from Australia. Goods that are classified as Dual Use (with actual or potential civilian or military applications) and goods developed or used solely for defence purposes are tightly controlled. This is in line with Australia’s obligations under various international treaties including the US International Traffick in Arms Regulations (ITAR), the Wassenaar Arrangement and various others.

Some examples of our work in this area include:

  • Advising on the implications of the US international Traffick in Arms Regulations, the Wassenaar Treaty and Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty
  • Liaising with the Department of Defence for multi-country permits for export of goods within the Dual Goods and Services List, as well as managing multi-country transit
  • Reviewing imported components and their subsequent use to ensure compliance with various regulations, treaties and laws.

If your goods may be subject to export regulation, FAL is able to assist. For more information, contact Anne Donaldson or Jenni Lightowlers.
